2007 Fonseca, Vintage Port (750ml)
Portugal (Red)
Wine Advocate: 94 Wine Spectator: 94

"96 out of 100...A limpid purple garnet core. The nose is quintessential Fonseca, like a riotous party reaching its crescendo in the glass. Macerated black cherries, eau-de-vie, damson, fig and a touch of Seville orange. Then what is fascinating is that the uproar dies down with aeration, becomes more focused...as if the host has asked everyone to quieten down. The palate is powerful and spicy on the entry, sweet ripe black berried fruits, a touch of spice, fig and apricot, lovely cohesion and weight building towards a deeply joyous finish that lacquers the mouth in port-like reverie. Perhaps more approachable than the 2000 or the 2003 at this stage, this is a marvellous Fonseca. Tasted May 2009." - Neal Martin, Wine Journal

"94 out of 100...A subtle yet powerful young Vintage Port, with freshly sliced plum, citrus and mulberry on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a solid core of powerful tannins and a long, balanced finish. So tight and reserved. Muscularly structured. Best after 2017." - WS

"94 out of 100...The 2007 Fonseca Vintage Port is opaque purple-colored with a high-class perfume of lavender, Asian spices, pencil lead, incense, and an amalgam of black fruits. On the palate it is voluminous with layered, succulent fruit, outstanding density, and excellent integration of tannin, acidity, and alcohol. The long finish and the wine's impeccable balance suggest a lengthy evolution and a drinking window extending out to 2045." - WA

"(92-94+) out of 100... Cask sample. NOTE: The first bottle I had in Portugal was seriously flawed and it was replaced. I had the same issue with Croft, so although I had the opportunity to try these again, I also re-tasted TFP Ports three consecutive days prior to the newsletter being sent out. Those tasting notes are not reflected here, but can be found by searching in the brand new FTLOP TNDB. IMO, those TNs present a precise and up to date picture of where these 3 VPs are at now! I was still able to try cask samples in May (3x) and then again in June, the latter time as part of a 9 bottle blind flight of 2007s, three sessions over a 3-day weekend. This is a composite note of those six experiences. I very much enjoyed the swirling aromas of blueberry and figs, smoky tar, prunes and esteva. Medium-full bodied, silky smooth and approachable from the get go, with ample acidity and tannins that were soft, fine grained and medium-ripe. Fonseca '07 features a juicy, black cherry and boysenberry profile with accents of figs and a hint of cocoa, in a rather simple but tasty, elegant profile. I found the "reveal(s)" surprising as these bottles presented a soft wine of finesse and not the focused intensity I typically associate with Fonseca VPs, but easy drinking nonetheless. Again, please do go to the new TNDB for a more current single blind impression (of Fonseca/Croft/Taylor). 9,300 cases (12 x 750s) produced. This Fonseca can be enjoyed now or cellared through 2035." - Roy Hersh, For the Love of Port
